The 2020 Legislature convened on January 13. With a plaintiffs lawyer-friendly House of Representatives and Senate as well as a former plaintiffs lawyer as governor, the LRC has its work cut out this session.  For a complete run-down on the status of liability bills, check out the LRC Bill Tracker.

The LRC has long-opposed qui tam legislation, as it is encourages frivolous lawsuits and lacks proper oversight.   Enforcement can undermine companies’ efforts to comply with the employment law.  Under this legislation, employees are dissuaded to report an employment issue to the human resources compliance department in favor of bringing a lawsuit with a significant cash payout.  The Legislature has a responsibility to protect Washington employers and workers from abusive and costly litigation.  Review our convenient HB 1965 Issue Brief and Qui tam abuses.
